MMM Review- JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #2
MMM Review- JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK #2
I was fairly impressed with Justice League Dark #1 last month. I’m even more impressed with issue #2. While I’ve never been a huge fan of all things supernatural, there is no doubt I am a fan of what Milligan and Janin are doing with this book.
Issue #2 picks up with Zatanna tearing through the streets on her motorcycle on the way to her showdown with The Enchantress. Last time we saw Zatanna, she had left Batman tied up and not too happy about her decision to take on this new enemy alone. Zatanna reaches a scene of pure and twisted horror as The Enchantress has turned a city street into something mixed between the Twilight Zone and Swamp Thing.
Next we find Dove aka Dawn Granger hanging out in a local bar when she is approached by someone she doesn’t know but turns out to be Deadman possessing someone else’s body in order for them to have at least a semi-normal time together out in public. It’s not long before we find out the reason for Boston Brand’s choice to inhabit this John Doe’s body and it’s something that clearly makes Dawn uncomfortable. This scene actually takes place during the time of issue #1, but it establishes the backstory for us for when June Moon knocks at their apartment door at the end of issue #1.
Without giving too much away, a few things happen upon the interaction with June Moon that makes it easy to buy into the idea that Deadman definitely can be a little bit of a sleaze-ball when he chooses to be. It’s clear to see that this “Justice League” is made up of some people who aren’t your average superheroes. This is definitely something that helps set this book apart from others.
There is quite a lot happening in this issue. We have another appearance by John Constantine and an ending to the issue that I wasn’t expecting and made me emit a verbal “Wow!” In terms of this Justice League coming together to fight against The Enchantress, not much has happened yet. It appears that Milligan is taking his time setting up this story and I don’t consider that to be a bad thing. While the pace of the story is a bit slow, like I already mentioned, there is a lot going on. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your reading preference and patience. I’m excited to see where this story goes.
